We have just returned from a fantastic one week stay at the Santo Maris. The hotel is in a marvellous location overlooking the sea in multiple direction, including to the west to see the famous sunsets. The villas are very spacious, comfortable and with enormous beds. The restaurant is very good with spectacular views over the infinity pool out over the sea. The food is on the expensive side but the quality is reflected in the price you pay, the location and service. There is a good selection of wine from Santorini and Greece as well as from wider afield. The staff are impeccable, from the moment of arrival to departure. They are always polite and go out of their way to help. There are staff available to help advise and book tours, housekeepers that keep you plied with complimentary bottles of chilled water throughout the day and staff from the spa even come around the sunbeds offering (free) short massages and advice on sun protection! The spa itself is excellent, with a good variety of treatments and again exceptional staff. Some reviewers have commented about the location being a short walk from Oia. For us, this was a big advantage. Oia can get very busy, particularly if your arrival in town coincides with a couple of coach loads of cruise passengers from Fira. The SM was an oasis of calm compared to this – a 5 minute walk yet a world away in terms of calm tranquillity with plenty of space. Could it be improved? Maybe some shade (umbrella) on the verandas, so these are usable during the middle of the day (although we recognise this might spoil the aesthetics.). There is a pillow menu but maybe a duvet menu too? We had some trouble getting the temperature right at night and ditching the duvet for a sheet and blanket might have solved the problem. Overall, we would have no hesitation in recommending this as a great place to stay. PS: We know the management read these reviews. It would be great if they could feedback to the authorities that, whilst Santorini is a marvellous place to visit, the experience of leaving through the airport is pretty dreadful. The departure area desperately needs expanding and it is a shame that the last memories of our holiday are of being crammed like sardines with virtually no room to move let alone sit down and barely any facilities. The contrast to our treatment in the hotel could not be more extreme!
